How waterproof is your waterproof?
Natalie Budge
Choosing the right waterproof riding coat or jacket for life at the stables is often a difficult decision when you’re confronted with a vast selection, particularly as they all sound like the one you need!
Today’s climate means that it’s often more wet than it is cold. So waterproof wear for equestrians has become increasingly important over the last few years, more important to some than a warm coat!
This blog outlines waterproof ratings and important features to help you find the right waterproof riding coat or jacket for you.
Waterproof ratings
How waterproof an item of clothing actually is will depend on its waterproof rating. The higher the waterproof rating, the longer the fabric will remain waterproof. Use the rating in the table below when you’re looking to buy a coat or jacket as it shows you how waterproof it will be.
Rating |
Resistance |
Weather |
Up to 1,999mm |
Water resistant |
Very light rain |
2,000mm–4,999mm |
Waterproof |
Light to average rain |
5,000mm-9,999mm |
Very Waterproof |
Moderate to heavy rain |
10,000mm and above |
Highly Waterproof |
Heavy rain |
How is the rating calculated?
Waterproof ratings are measured in millimetres using a “Hydrostatic Head” test. In this test, the fabric is pulled tight under a 1-inch diameter sealed tube of water. This is then observed over 24 hours to ascertain how many millimetres of water the fabric can withstand before it soaks through. The level at which water starts to come through the fabric is the hydrostatic head, which is measured in milimetres.
What makes fabric waterproof?
Essentially there are two kinds of ‘waterproof’ fabric: water resistant (sometimes referred to as showerproof), and fully waterproof.
The fabric used for water resistant equestrian jackets and coats will be treated with a Durable Water Repellency coating (DWR), or a similar water repellent coating. You can tell if a garment has been treated with a water repellent coating as water will bead up on the surface of the fabric and run off. The biggest advantage of water-resistant fabrics is price, as they tend to be more affordable than fully waterproof styles. However, they will usually be less durable and may need reproofing more regularly than other waterproof riding jackets.
What features should I look for?
Taped seams: a garment can be treated with a waterproof coating and have a waterproof membrane but still not be fully waterproof. For a jacket to be 100% waterproof, it will also need to have taped seams. These are heat sealed seams that stop water coming through the stitching. It is particularly important to choose a riding jacket or coat with taped seams if you will be in heavy and/or prolonged rain.
Zips: the front zip helps to keep the water out too. Pockets may also have zips to stop your belongings from getting wet.
There are two types:
- a hydro-seal zip: a rubber mechanism that binds shut when closed
- a storm baffle or cover: a piece of material that folds over the zip. and is usually kept in position with snap closures.
Both types are effective - a hydro-seal zip is lighter and less bulky, while a storm baffle tends to be more durable.
Coat or jacket?
A coat will usually protect you down to at least mid-thigh length. It will provide more protection from the elements then a jacket simply because it’s longer. A good waterproof coat with a hood is the best choice for extreme wet weather, or if you're someone who really suffers out in the elements.
A jacket will keep your core warm and give you more manoeuverability but won't protect your legs. This will only be a problem in very cold and/or windy conditions or if you suffer from chilblains on your thighs. You can wear a jacket in -10 but it’s probably not ideal if you’re going to be spending long periods outside.
Remember, if you want to wear either in a range of temperatures, think carefully about the number of layers underneath and choose the fit accordingly.
