Waterproof Riding Wear Buying Guide

wet weather horse riding gear buying guide

When it comes to horse riding in the rain, us equestrians tend to have vastly different opinions. Some don’t mind getting a little wet, whereas others would rather muck out every stable rather than ride in the rain!  Regardless of which side of the fence you’re on, it rains a fair bit in the UK and, what’s more, it rains a lot in some parts more than others.  And when it does, you don’t want to be caught unprepared. If you’re unsure where to start shopping, don’t stress. We’ve put together a guide of some our favourite waterproof picks from some of our favourite brands.  So the next time showers are forecast, you’ll be well prepared and ready to ride whatever the weather…

Trousers

If you want the perfect pair of trousers for rainy weather, put the Horze Unisex Waterproof Shell Trousers in your bag and never worry about being caught in the rain again!  They’re waterproof, made of a breathable fabric with taped seams.  Full length zips at the sides of the legs make getting these trousers on and off a breeze.

Jackets

Mountain Horse is most definitely best in its class for waterproof jackets.  This season they have a great selection of unisex waterproof jackets.  The Mountain Horse Mountain Rider Jacket and the Stanford Jacket are all longer than most jackets, offering you extra coverage and protection from wet conditions.  It comes with fully taped seams and is made of a waterproof, breathable fabric that delivers reliable riding protection keeping you warm and dry.  Available in a cheerful red, dark navy or black with reflective piping strategically placed for better visibility.

However if you’re off out competing and dark skies are looming, you might want to try Kingsland’s Unisex Classic Transparent Rain Jacket.  This short jacket is waterproof and has ventilation holes under each arm.  It has one of the Kingsland distinctive emblems on the chest and arm. This jacket can be worn when competing as it meets competition clothing standards.

Coats

Alternatively if you’d rather a full length version, look no further than the Toggi Pembrooke Unisex Riding Mac.   It will cover you and your saddle!  Made from 100% waterproof and breathable fabric, it has all you need in for riding: taped seams, detachable shoulder cape and leg straps attached to make riding very practical, comfortable, and dry.  If the Pembrooke is a bit pricey and a bit more than you wanted to pay, how about HKM’s Dublin Long Riding Coat?  It’s great value and about half the price.   If you’d prefer a bargain, then try the HKM Long Transparent Rain Mac, it’s full length and does the trick!

Gloves

Whether you’re happy hacker or a hard core equestrian, we all have one thing in common – we need protection against the elements and Sealskinz offer a range of gloves that do this.  Keeping your hands dry is the easy part. Designing a glove to allow your hands to breath and wick away perspiration is the tougher challenge.  Take a look at our bestselling SealSkinz glove – the Ladies Winter Riding Glove.  It ticks all the boxes for wet weather.  If you want something a bit smarter, how about Mountain Horse’s Ladies Soft Shell Glove?  They have a really close-contact feel with the added advantage of a waterproof membrane.

Boots

If you want a great boot to ride in, turn out and keep warm in, the Colt Ryder by Muck Boots is a great buy.

So don't let the rain stop you from riding…whether it’s out hacking, schooling or competing, our range of women's waterproof equestrian clothing by well-known brands will help keep you dry and happy as few things will leave you more miserable than being soaked to the skin!
