If the weather forecasters are right, the UK is set for some freezing weather over the next few weeks, courtesy of the polar vortex that hit America last month. While we might not be in for quite as dramatic a freeze, it still makes sense to be prepared – especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors riding or doing yard work.
Having cold hands isn’t just uncomfortable, it can hinder your work and even damage your health. There are innumerable options for winter gloves out there - luckily, we’ve done the research for you and narrowed the search down to our pick of the four best all-weather and winter gloves that really cut it when keeping you warm:
These SealSkinz gloves are designed to protect your hands in the worst of weathers – they have an impressive insulation rating of 4 out of 5. This comes courtesy of a patented three-layer technology which includes a close-fitting, durable outer layer, a waterproof middle layer and a cosy merino wool liner. The merino wool is naturally anti-bacterial and wicks away moisture, making the gloves comfortable and breathable as well as completely weather-proof. There’s a fleece wiper on the back and reflective piping in the seams, making them a good bet for both riding and working.
100% waterproof and insulated with 40g of Thinsulate, these gloves are great at keeping you warm – but are also breathable. The ribbed cuff provides a close fit while the slimline design and thinner palm increases the sensitivity for riding. All of this is combined with Tredstep’s Wet-Tec for grip in all conditions.
We also really rate the Tredstep Polar H2O glove. It's a fantastic option for all-weather riding as it is crafted from an Air Fibre stretch back synthetic suede to increase sensitivity. On top of this, Tredstep have used 40g of Thinsulate insulation, an extended cuff and a breathable membrane to retain the warmth without making the gloves too hot.
These lightweight, technical all-weather gloves are a good choice for slightly warmer winter weather (SealSkinz have given them a a warmth rating of 3 out of 5). They use SealSkinz patented three-layer technology and feature extended, stretch cuffs for heat retention. At the same time, they are very dextrous with a pre-curved, reinforced design on the fingers which allows consistent contact with the reins.
