Down Coats and Jackets

down riding coat and jacket buying guide

For years, down and feathers have been used for insulation. Down feathers are the soft, finer feathers found under the outer layer on the bodies of certain birds like ducks, geese and Eider ducks. It’s loose ‘fluffy’structure makes it perfect for insulation as it traps air to prevent heat loss. When used as a filling for coats, sleeping bags or duvets etc, it’s very light-weight and easy to compress which makes it an ideal item to take away with you as it's easy to pack.  Perfect for those long, crisp cold winter days when nothing else will keep you warm!

All our coats and jackets can be used for riding or for those essential stable duties.

The top of the range down jacket is the gorgeous Mountain Horse Belvedere Ladies Down JacketMountain Horse always impresses with its technology and this jacket is no different.  There’s a minimum of 80% down and 20% feathers in a four-layer construction that encases down inside two inner layers, making the coat water resistant. It’s also really light-weight and breathable. The fur lined hood and collar look good when you’re standing around, but aren’t the best for riding, so Mountain Horse have made them detachable.

If the weather gets even colder, we recommend the longer Cavallino Marino Atlantis Coat. It has a very high percentage of down, but remains light and breathable. In fact, it's so warm you won’t need to wear many layers underneath, making everything much less bulky and easier to wear or ride in. Windproof and waterproof, this coat certainly scores highly on the technology front, but what we like about it, is that it also looks stylish with an elasticated waist, giving a more fitted shape and a luxurious faux fur lined hood.

We also love the longer Lauria Garrelli Down Coat. It has the same great features, but in a longer design, which adds a little extra warmth and makes it a top pick for standing around at shows or for general winter wear.   Definitely one to watch out for next Autumn/Winter.

If you need something a little more all-purpose, try the Mountain Horse Belvedere Coat. It’s knee-length, but has a full-length, two way zip and a vent at the centre back to make it suitable for riding. Mountain Horse always impresses with its technology and this coat is no different. Just like it's jacket counterpart, there’s a minimum of 80% down and 20% feathers in a four-layer construction that encases down inside two inner layers, making the coat water resistant. It’s also really light-weight and breathable. The fur lined hood and collar look good when you’re standing around, but aren’t the best for riding, so Mountain Horse have made them detachable. A great all-rounder.

We offer a good selection of riding coats and jackets. Whether you're looking for something for yourself, or as a gift, you'll find something to suit all pockets.
