Kim's Picks
Oct 17,2016 | Kim Horton
It's getting colder and wetter so this week my equestrian picks this week are written with inclement weather in mind! Here's a selection of products that I'm using at the moment to keep warm and dry!
Is it just us horse owners who have noticed that it’s getting a little nippy in the mornings? Once the evenings start to draw in, it can only mean one thing… Gilet season. Invest in a decent one and you’ll find that you get good wear out of it. You’ll be surprised!
The reason why I’ve picked the Montar Sophie Gilet is because it’s both functional yet fashionable too. Down filled for extra warmth and yet very lightweight. It’s high ribbed collar does the job of a scarf keeping out the cold. Uber smart for wearing during lessons and clinics, you’ll be able to regulate your body temperature with the obvious thermostat known as the “2-way zip”!
Not only is is getting a bit colder, it’s also getting a bit wetter. Here in Hertfordshire we had heavy rain at the weekend. It’s every rider’s worst nightmare as there’s nothing worse than riding in soggy breeches!
So these Toggi Usk Over Trousers are a “must have” for any rider, particularly those that live in high rainfall areas. Fully waterproof, with a stretch panel at ankle to make getting on and off easy, they’re breathable which is so important because there’s no point keeping the rain out only to overheat on the inside and end up soaked in sweat!
My horse is in a fleece at night in his stable. And I absolutely love this one from JHL. I cannot speak highly enough of it. The quality’s better than equivalent more expensive brands, it washes well in the washing machine when my husband’s not watching and the cut of is quite deep even for my 16.2 hands Dutch warmblood. Shop the JHL Fleece Rug.
HyIMPACT Neoprene Over Reach Boots
I turn out in overreach boots all year round as otherwise my horse inevitably comes in with a shoe missing! Many owners just use overreach boots when the ground is muddy as for them there is an increased risk of injury or loss to their horse at this time.
Whilst the rubber ones are cheap to buy, they don’t always last that long, do they? They rip or the flimsy Velcro comes unstitched and the boot usually ends up coming off completely! The fact that the bright colours make them easy to find, is just not enough for me and I got tired of always replacing them. So I tried the HyIMPACT Neoprene Over Reach Boots. The neoprene they’re made of is very hardwearing and quick to wash off. However the best thing about them is the Velcro on them: it’s really sturdy stuff and securely stitched to the neoprene.
Do you have a favourite EQUUS product? Tell me about it and I'll feature it in this weekly slot. Just email me here with your suggestion. Best suggestion each week wins a prize!
