Hi Viz for Horse Riding in Hot Weather

May 22,2018 | Kim Horton

Hi Viz Wear For Hot Weather

When the weather starts to warm up, it’s often too hot for riders to wear a Hi Viz jacket or to put a Hi Viz rug on a horse. However there are cooler alternatives available that ensure that you and your horse will be seen on the road or in the countryside.

It's in Spring and Summer that various crops burst into life and flower, trees are at their bushiest, country lanes and bridleways are overgrown. The result is that visibility is often impaired for drivers, for example, to spot horse riders in sufficient time to slow down.

The latest thinking shows that the best colour is no longer just good, old fashioned yellow. This is because during the rape season it's not actually possible to see a rider against a field of rape. So pink and orange are becoming more popular for this simple reason.

For the Rider

By the very nature of the design of Hi Viz gilets and tabards are much cooler to wear than a jacket. The Equisafety Air Hi Viz Waistcoat Please Pass Wide And Slowly below has stacks of ventilation!

If you prefer something a little more substantial, a hi viz gilet is a good alternative, especially as most have pockets. The Hy Equestrian Hi Viz Padded Gilet, available in yellow, pink or orange, is a really flexible piece of clothing as it's light enough to wear in summer with just a t-shirt underneath it or warm enough in Spring and Autumn to wear with a fleece.

An item of reflective wear that won't make you hot, is a hi viz hat band. Simple and easy to put on, you'll be visible over hedges lining the roads or gardens.

For the Horse

A lightweight and breathable exercise rug, such as the Equisafety Charlotte Dujardin Multi-Coloured Hi-Viz Exercise Sheet is a fantastic way to be seen on the roads. Made from highly breathable mesh, it's designed to help keep your horse cool, even in the summer heat.

Leg boots and wraps are still a great way of making your horse visible in the sunnier weather. The Weatherbeeta Hi Viz Reflective Single Lock Brushing Boots below are breathable, making them highly suitable for warmer weather.

There's other reflective equipment that you can use in the warmer weather that won't make your horse too hot. For example a Tail Guard is another very lightweight item. The Hy Equestrian Silva Flash Reflective Hi Viz Tail Band is a great example. When lights shine on the reflective material it increases your visibility to drivers and other road users.

Another simple item designed to give added visibility, is a Hi Viz Breast Plate. The Roma Reflective Hi Viz Breastplate below is quite thick making it easily visible.
