5 Horsey Jobs For June

June is the month when you really start to feel that winter is definitely over and done with for another year. It’s a great month. It reminds us of summer, clear skies and the warmth of the sun. The days are long and the weather's warm which is great for horses and riders.

Look out for Lammy

Laminitis continues to be one of the worst conditions that horses are most susceptible to. Restrict access to lush pasture, particularly during the spring months when the sugar and starch in the grass is at its highest. Rather than reduce or limit turnout, section off the lush part of his field or, even better, set up a Track System.

Be fly ready

As the daily temperatures start to rise, so does the fly population. Make sure that you’ve got everything you need before they become a real nuisance. If you want a good range to choose from, with the best products, you need to start looking now as the recommended ones will sell out, some at EQUUS have already done so ☹.

Set a goal

It may sound boring, but the summer, which officially starts on Saturday 20th June, gives you three months to work towards something. That’s three whole months of warmer temperatures and extended daylight hours, so if you’re not going to perfect your dressage movements now, take the plunge cross country or step up to the next level show jumping, when will you?

Get out and about

June usually heralds the arrival of warmer weather and with it the opportunity to get and about, with or without your horse. There are plenty of local shows on in June. Even if you’re not competing, make the effort to go along and support it, so that this quintessentially English event can continue in future years. Alternatively, plan a trip to the beach if one is in striking distance.

Try something new

If you’re bored of your current routine, you can bet your horse is, too. Take advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures to shake it up. It doesn’t have to be a new riding discipline, either. Whether you scour some horsey books for new exercises, revamp your routine with an early-morning ride, or even try your hand at some groundwork, you’ll both be glad of the change.

Organise rug repairs

Now that the warmer weather’s upon us, it’s probably safe to get your winter rugs cleaned and then, once they’ve been cleaned, get all the spares that you need to replace the “broken” bits, such as leg straps. Despite your best attempts to buy a durable, long-lasting rug, some horses just have a way of putting their rugs through that extra wear and tear. Broken a buckle or lost a leg strap? Do your own quick and affordable horse rug repairs with one of our rug accessories. More importantly, don't delay - do them now before you need to use the rug!
