Best Riding Tights For 2020

Riding tights? It just sounds so strange, doesn’t it, to wear "tights" when riding your horse? But do you know why they are now significantly more popular than breeches and jods in summer? This is because the fabric they're made of is much lighter in weight so you won't get as hot and it means they dry more quickly.

What are riding tights?

Riding tights, leggings or skins, as they are occasionally known, are now a popular choice for horse riders in both summer and winter. As their name suggests, they’re thinner than breeches and jods. This means that you have a closer feel to your horse whilst riding and often additional grip, as many of them have silicone seats or knee patches.

Why do riders wear tights?

Like most people, equestrians work from 9am until 5pm. Before and after these times, they have to get their horse(s) fed, watered, turned out, mucked out, exercised and so the list goes on! And then there may be the dog to walk, a pilates class, as well as trying to spend more than 10 minutes at the dinner table with family to remember what they all look like! You get the point. Getting changed for each of these activities is a chore in itself! Enter the riding tight…

What’s so special about them?

Good Grip: The #1 goal of riding is to stay on! Riding tights are designed with knee patch or full seat grip, usually made of some type of subtle silicone pattern. This feature helps you “stick” to the saddle in key contact points like your inner leg, knee, thigh, and seat.

Built for comfort: A trip to see your horse is often a couple of hours. In addition to the riding itself, there’s handling tack, grooming, watching others ride and just hanging out. The last thing you want is to spend hours wishing you’d worn something more comfortable. Riding tights are made to wear all day with no regrets.

Wide waist: Many riding tights have an extra wide waistband, which is essential if you refuse to comprise on comfort.

Belt loops: Some riding tights have them, and others don’t. If wearing a belt when you ride is a must, look out for styles with this feature.

Pockets: Peace and quiet is perfect in the yoga studio but a mobile phone is essential if you’re hacking out or even schooling on your own. It’s simply the safe thing to do. Plus, we all want to stay selfie-ready! Many riding tights have a special phone pocket on the outer leg or top of the thigh that makes it easy to access your phone while you’re riding.

Underwear proof: A pull-on garment that’s made of very stretchy material that’s heavy enough so that you can’t see what colour underwear you’re wearing? RESULT!.

Long lasting: Riding tights are made to be far more durable than leggings that you can buy from the supermarket! You’ll find that they’ll last for months, even years longer than a pair of polyester/cotton leggings.

Price is Right: Breeches can be a bit pricey, yet there are plenty of nice riding tights out there that won’t break the bank. Here are my faves…
